There used to be a beautiful old oak tree in our back yard. It was home to several squirrels and other critters; it provided shade in the summer and was a blanket in winter. Then, with hardly any notice, two men came and cut it down one day last week.
Granted, it was fascinating to watch the guys remove it, and Barley was captivated:

But it was so sad to see the stump they left behind:

It reminded me of
The Giving Tree, and I felt so sorry for the tree. If you watch this video with the sound on, you can hear not only how upset Barley is, but also how angry the squirrels are that they have to find a new home.
"Once there was a tree... and she loved a little dog."

How sad. Poor Barley, he seems lost/confused, and those squirrels are pissed. Was the tree sick - did they tell you why it was cut down?
It was kind of leaning, but not enough to warrant cutting it down. It was a huge tree, for heaven's sake! I think the root system could have handled it. Unfortunately, that land is technically not ours, so we had no say over it.
Sorry about the tree, but in fairness, Barley is not "a little dog" by any stretch of the imagination! I think he was just using it as an excuse to dig like crazy! That silly pup!
He's far from little. I was paraphrasing The Giving Tree. "There once was a tree...and she loved a little boy." Didn't they have that book in Ireland, Jill? :)
